10 Little Caterpillars by Bill Martin Jr

working on initial /k/  & past tense- scroll down for more activities

This lesson is about using the /k/ sound at the beginnings of words and also remembering to use past tense words when we talk about something that already happened.

To make the /k/ sound, we raise the back of our tongues to make contact with the soft palate in to stop a flow of air as we push it out of our lungs.  This is an unvoiced sound, meaning the larynx is not activated for this sound.  That gives the /k/ an airy quality, rather than sounding like a tone.

Using past tense accurately is very important for clear communication.  It indicates and action that has already happened.  For most action words we use regular past tense, with the -ed at the end of the word.

Here are some activities to practice these forms with your child:

  1.  Cook a meal or a snack with your child's help a.nd then talk about  what you cooked.  A slideshow to practice is below
  2. Look around your home for things to count. Make a list of things you counted with words or pictures.  A slideshow to practice this activity is below, too.
  3. Playlists of songs and stimulus pictures for practice are also below. Scroll down for fun ways to practice.

Core  vocab:  call- called, count- counted, color- colored, cook-cooked, cold, could, can, key,  keep
