AAC iPad Apps - links, descriptions and reviews the ones I'm familiar with. I'm adding to this page by first doing the ones I've used the most, then I'll sort through the other ones I've accessed more briefly. There are actually many more available at the app store.  Here is a journal article from June 2012 reviewing a bunch of the most highly rated ones.

GoTalkNow

GoTalkNow allows you to create simple boards and link them. You can change cell sizes and hide cells to further simplify your board. You can also create and hide different board sets. I've found this to be a very useful and flexible app.

Sonoflex

Picture
Sonoflex has 12 core words ,  12 linguistic categories and  4 fringe categories on home page.   Root words can be accessed in 2 hits with some scrolling, morphological variations with an extra hit.  I have found it fairly easy to learn to program new vocabulary and my students, from 1st grade & up , have learned how to program new vocabulary as well. The visual profile is clean and easy to understand for caregivers new to AAC.  The major drawback to this app is that each device has to be programmed separately and cannot be synched.

Speak for Yourself

Touch Chat

This app has a large number of pre-made linked page sets so you can set up simple activity pages or linked core vocab boards.  Cells can be hidden but their sizes can not be modified.  Boards can be arranged as grids or scene displays.  Boards can be programmed, saved and then loaded onto the device.  Transitions between screens are fairly quick, but some common vocabulary terms require 3 or more hits to reach. Output can also be directed onto common social networking sites which could be very useful for some AAC users.

Special Stories

Picture
This app makes stories or word sequences with text, voice and pictures . You can then  export as pdf and then open stories in iBooks or other notetaking apps.. Uses a simple process and  is visually uncluttered. I have used this app extensively to ceate personal narratives and articultion practice lists as well as trad. social stoies.  This is probably my very favorite app.
